We are living at a time when nothing is as important as information. That’s why mass media play a great role in modern society. They include radio, television, printed materials such as newspapers and magazines and, of course, the Internet. Mass media give us useful and interesting information and news and also help to have an enjoyable free time. Young people and adults seek information about weather, sporting events, available entertainment and local, national and international news. We need this information for personal, professional and academic purposes.
Newspapers remain a popular source of information. They range from thick daily quality newspapers and tabloids to small local weekly newspapers to satisfy any taste. People can buy them as well as subscribe to any of them at the post office.
Radio is another source of information. There are dozens of radio-stations in Russia which broadcast music of different styles as well as weather forecast, sports news, talk shows and horoscopes.
Television is the most important form of mass media. It informs, educates and entertains people. It influences the way people look at the world and can make them change their views.
However, nowadays many programs and films show too much violence and blood and it can damage the image of the world we live in. Besides, TV doesn’t stimulate creative thinking and makes people dependent on the views, expressed by others.
As to the Internet, it is the newest kind of mass media. The main advantage of it is that any information is available and you get it quickly at any time of day or night. It is the easiest way to get the latest news and do the shopping without leaving home. What’s more , e-mail communication has become one of the most popular ways of keeping in touch with people all over the world.
On the whole, it is hard to imagine modern society without mass media. That’s why it is often called information society.
