Harmful effects of alcohol

Alcohol is a dangerous substance that is toxic to the brain. It can cause permanent brain damage when taken in excess, leading to a decline in mental function. It is also a leading cause of death in the Western world. In 2010, there were nearly 9000 alcohol-related deaths in the UK alone, and that outnumbers the deaths caused by all illegal drugs combined.
In large amounts, alcohol causes changes in the brain, resulting in intoxication. People who have overused alcohol may stagger, lose their coordination, and slur their speech. They will probably be confused and disoriented. Depending on the person, intoxication can make someone very friendly and talkative or very aggressive and angry. Reaction times are slowed dramatically — which is why people are told not to drink and drive.
When large amounts of alcohol are consumed in a short period of time, alcohol poisoning can result. Alcohol poisoning is exactly what it sounds like — the body has become poisoned by large amounts of alcohol. Violent vomiting is usually the first symptom of alcohol poisoning. Extreme sleepiness, unconsciousness, difficulty breathing, dangerously low blood sugar, and even death may result.
Harmful effects of alcohol
Alcohol is a major cause of ill health; it causes and contributes to a wide range of serious health problems, accidents and deaths.

• There were 8,790 alcohol related deaths in 20108; the equivalent to a jumbo jet crashing every 17 days.1

Alcohol accounts for 80% of deaths from liver disease.1

• Alcohol is the second biggest risk factor for cancer after smoking.2

Alcohol causes and contributes to numerous health problems including liver and kidney disease; cancers of the mouth and throat, liver, breast cancer; acute and chronic pancreatitis; heart disease; high blood pressure; depression; stroke and foetal alcohol syndrome.3

Addiction means a person has no control over whether he or she uses a drug or drink. Someone who's addicted to some drug has grown so used to it that he or she has to have it. Addiction can be physical, psychological, or both.
Physical Addiction
Being physically addicted means a person's body actually becomes dependent on a particular substance (even smoking is physically addictive). It also means building tolerance to that substance, so that a person needs a larger dose than ever before to get the same effects.
Someone who is physically addicted and stops using a substance like drugs, alcohol, or cigarettes may experience withdrawal symptoms. Common symptoms of withdrawal are diarrhea, shaking, and generally feeling awful.

Psychological Addiction
Psychological addiction happens when the cravings for a drug are psychological or emotional. People who are psychologically addicted feel overcome by the desire to have a drug. They may lie or steal to get it. Their whole life centers around the need for the drug
Unfortunately, overcoming addiction is not easy. Quitting drugs or drinking is probably one of the hardest things a person can ever do. It's not a sign of weakness if you need professional help from a trained drug counselor or therapist. Most people who try to cope with a drug or alcohol problem need professional assistance or a treatment program to do so.

On 31st October I celebrated Halloween with my friends. It’s a special celebration here with games and fun. We dress up as ghosts and witches and visit people’s homes to play “trick-or-treat”. What celebration do you like best in your country? What do you do to celebrate it? How does it compare in popularity with other celebrations there?

Dear Sandra,
Thank you for your last letter. Sorry I haven’t written for so long as I was busy with my school.
I’m glad you enjoyed the celebration. Halloween sounds like great fun. My favourite celebration is Maslenitsa or Pancake Day. We eat lots of pancakes, called bliny. Maslenitsa welcomes the coming of spring. At the end of the festival a figure representing winter is burnt on a bonfire. Other popular celebrations are New Year and Victory Day, a huge celebration with parades held on 9th May in honour of the victory over fascists in 1945.
That's all for now as I have to finish my homework. Hope to hear from you soon.
Best wishes,
Ann

9th form Card 3 Russia’s Educational System

9th form Card 3 Russia’s Educational System

9th form Card 3 Russia’s Educational System
Card3
1.       What is Russia's public educational system like?
2.       In what types of schools is compulsory education given?
3.       What are children in Russia taught at different stages of a secondary school?
4.       What exams do schoolchildren in Russia take?

Russia’s Educational System

Citizens of Russia have the right to education which is guaranteed by the Constitution. The public educational system in our country incorporates pre-school, general school, specialized secondary and higher education.

Pre-school includes creches[1] and kindergartens. Children there learn numbers, letters, colours. But pre-school education isn’t compulsory - children can get it at home.

Compulsory education is for children from 6(7) to 17 years of age. The main link in the system of education is the general school which prepares the younger generation for life and work in modern society. There are various types of schools: general secondary schools, schools specializing in a certain subject, lyceums and others. Tuition in most of them is free of charge, but some new types of schools are fee-paying.

The term of study in a general secondary school is 11 years and consists of primary, middle and upper stages. Children are accepted to the first grade at the age of 6 or 7. They are taught, ideally, by a single teacher through all four elementary grades (except for physical training and foreign languages). At the middle stage of a secondary school the children learn the basic laws of nature and society at the lessons of History, Algebra, Literature, Physics and many others. The school year extends from September 1 to the end of May and is divided into three or four terms. The Study Programme in schools is fixed. Students are graded on a 5-step scale, ranging in practice from 2 ("unacceptable") to 5 ("excellent"); 1 is a rarely used sign of extreme failure.

After 9th form pupils have to sit for examinations. Also, they have a choice between entering the 10th grade of a general secondary school and enrolling in a specialized secondary or vocational school. After finishing the 11th form of a secondary school all pupils have to take Unified State Examinations. One, who finishes the secondary school, receives a Secondary Education Certificate, giving the right to enter any higher educational establishment.
