You have 30 minutes to do this task. You have received a letter from your English–speaking pen friend Sandra.
On 31st October I celebrated Halloween with my friends. It’s a special celebration here with games and fun. We dress up as ghosts and witches and visit people’s homes to play “trick-or-treat”. What celebration do you like best in your country? What do you do to celebrate it? How does it compare in popularity with other celebrations there?
Write him a letter and answer her 3 questions.
Write 100–120 words. Remember the rules of letter writing.

Dear Sandra,

Thank you for your last letter. Sorry I haven’t written for so long as I was busy with my school.

I’m glad you enjoyed the celebration. Halloween sounds like great fun. My favourite celebration is Maslenitsa or Pancake Day. We eat lots of pancakes, called bliny. Maslenitsa welcomes the coming of spring. At the end of the festival a figure representing winter is burnt on a bonfire. Other popular celebrations are New Year and Victory Day, a huge celebration with parades held on 9th May in honour of the victory over fascists in 1945.
That's all for now as I have to finish my homework. Hope to hear from you soon.

Best wishes,
Ann

  1. What is the history of the Olympic Games?
  2. Are the ancient and modern Olympics different? Why?
  3. Why are the modern Olympic Games so popular?
  4. What makes the 2014 Winter Games unique?
Olympic Games

The Olympic Games are the most important sporting event in the world that began in ancient Greece. The original Greek games took place every forth year for several hundred years, until they were brought to an end in the early Christian era. The Olympic Games were renewed in 1896, and since then they have been staged every forth year, except during World War 1 and World War 2. Beginning in 1924 Winter Olympics were included. They were held in the same year as the Summer Games, but starting in 1994, the Winter Games are held two years after the Summer Games.
Perhaps the main difference between the ancient and modern Olympics is that for the ancient Greeks the Games were a way of saluting their gods, when the modern Olympics are a manner of saluting the athletic talents of people of all nations. The original Olympics included competitions in music, oratory, and theatre performances as well. The modern Games haven’t got them, but represent a lot of sports. For two weeks and a half any international conflicts must be stopped and replaced with friendly competitions. This is the noble idea on which the modern Olympic movement is based.
The modern Olympic Games are currently at the very peak of their development. Hundreds of athletes prepare for the Games their whole lives and those who make it to the Olympic podium become an example to millions of others. Their achievements remain part of the history of the sport and of the Olympic Movement forever. The 2012 Summer Olympics were held in London. Russia was the forth after the USA, China and Great Britain and won 82 medals including 24 gold ones. In medal-winning terms, Russia's London 2012 performance marked an improvement on Beijing 2008, improving from 23 gold medals to 24 and up from a total of 73 medals to 82.
The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi will be holding events in 15 disciplines of 7 winter sports:
biathlon, bobsleigh( bobsleigh and skeleton), curling, ice hockey, luge, skating (figure skating, short track speed skating and speed skating), and skiing(alpine, cross country, nordic combined, ski jumping, freestyle and snowboard).
The 2014 Olympics will be the most compact Winter Games in the history of the Olympic Movement. It will be possible to get from one venue to another in just a matter of minutes and all Olympic and Paralympic competition will take place in the same venues. It is for this reason that all athletic facilities for the Sochi 2014 Games are being built with the needs of disabled people in mind.
Eleven athletic venues will be built for the Sochi 2014 Games, which will be divided into two clusters—mountain and coastal. The clusters will be located within 48km of each other, which is less than a 30 minute ride along a new railway.
Each cluster will contain an Olympic Village. The travel time from the Olympic Village to a competition venue in the coastal cluster will be no more than five minutes. Additionally, travel time from the Olympic Village to a competition venue in the mountain cluster is less than 15 minutes.
The central focus of the coastal cluster will be the Olympic Park. It will connect up all competition venues, the parking zone and the infrastructure elements. For the first time in the history of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, all ice arenas will be within walking distance of one other. The Olympic Park will be able to accommodate about 70,000 visitors when full. The Mountain Cluster will include Biathlon and Ski Complexes, a Bobsleigh Track, a Ski Center, a Ski Jump Complex, as well as a Snowboard Park and Freestyle Center.
The Hare, Polar Bear and Leopard have been chosen as the official Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games mascots following the results of a public vote during the live television show "Talismaniya Sochi 2014 - The Final” on Channel One. The Ray of Light and the Snowflake will be the Paralympic Winter Games mascots in 2014.

10th form term 2 card 5
My future career
  1. Why is it important to choose the right occupation for a lifetime?
  2. What aspects are taken into account when choosing a future profession?
  3. What is the most unusual and challenging job for a woman? Why?
  4. Is getting a prestigious job easy? Why/why not?
Sample answer (question 3)

Some women choose jobs that have been traditionally done by men as men are physically stronger than women. Probably, the most unusual and challenging job for a woman is bullfighting. The world of bullfighting is hard enough for a man as you have to be strong and brave. However, it’s even tougher for a woman who has to prove herself many times just to get her foot in the ring. Although women have won the right to fight bulls with men, some matadors still refuse to fight in the same ring as them.
To become a matador a woman has to go to a bullfighting school to train with professionals. Women have the same tough routine as men so they run, work out in the gym and practice for hours. They have no time for socializing and they travel a lot in order to fight. What’s more, like men, women can be seriously injured in the leg or in the stomach. After being wounded they think about how quickly they can get back to the ring. It damages their confidence, but it also makes them mature as it’s just unprofessional to be injured. Last but not least, to be popular with the crowds a woman has to have a champion’s mentality, as well as courage and technique.

Card 6 form 10 term2  topic "Fashion"

  1. Why is fashion a big part of our life?
  2. Why do people choose different styles of what we wear?
  3. What do young people prefer wearing nowadays?
  4. Is there your special style? Why/why not?

Form 10. Card 7 Topic “Holidays”

1. What are the most popular types of holidays? Why?
2. What makes a sightseeing holiday in London exciting?
3. What attracts people on holidays to Thailand?
4. What can spoil any holiday?

Sample answer (QUESTION 4)
However, if a tourist buys a package holiday, choices are limited. For example, if the entertainment or food provided is not to the traveller’s taste, they have to put up with it or pay extra for an alternative. Bad weather might also spoil your holiday so you should take suitable clothes. There might be problems with accommodation as well. For instance, you might find a broken cooker in self-catering appartments or rude unfriendly staff at a hotel. Delays and cancellations of flights or trains can spoil your journey. Besides, your luggage might be lost. Of course, you can avoid many problems if you plan your holiday carefully and weigh up all the good and bad points before choosing a holiday destination.

Sample 4. Question 4.
There are several things which can spoil any holiday. I mean the weather first. If it is rainy, windy and wet you can easily get soaked and catch a cold and you will have to stay indoors without getting new impressions of a new country and its people. Secondly, if you travel far away you can suffer from jetlag. You might feel tired or sleepy because of it and spend some time in your room instead of enjoying sightseeing or swimming in sparkling waters of the sea.
Finally, problems while travelling can cause unpleasant   holiday experiences, especially if your flight is delayed, your money or luggage is stolen or the service is bad.
Form 10. Topic “Holidays”
Sample 1. Question 1.
There is a great variety of holidays to choose from to cater for any interests, needs and tastes. I suppose that the most popular holidays are skiing holidays in winter, camping holidays in summer and package holidays all the year round, though they are absolutely different. Those who are sporty and want to get some exercise choose a skiing holiday somewhere in the Alps. You can hire the equipment or bring it with you to enjoy speed, getting a certain thrill, and relax in a cosy chalet. Nature lovers who long to escape to a land of endless rivers, bottomless lakes  and towering mountains choose a camping holiday as you can experience an adventure, living in a tent, cooking meals on the fire, breathing clean fresh air and drinking unpolluted water. Economical people who want to relax without the bother of overpriced hotels  prefer self-catering apartments. Lots of people choose package holidays when a travel agent  arranges the flights, accommodation ,meals and activities at a lower price so you save both money and time.
