My Favourite Book (example)

My Favourite Book
Books have been with me since my childhood. My parents have a big home book collection. There many interesting books by English and American writers. (…) I have read many marvellous books : “ Alice in Wonderland” by Luis Carrol, “Mowgli” by Rudyard Kipling, “Robinson Crusoe” by Daniel Defoe and many other interesting books, but my favourite book is “ The adventures of Tom Sawer” by Mark Twain.
Twain was a famous American writer. (Mark Twain was his pen-name, his real name was Samuel Clemens) He published the novel in 1876. It is an adventure story. It takes place in America in a small town on the Mississipi River. The plot of the book is full of thrilling moments.
 The main character of the book is Tom Sowyer. He was a boy with a wild, rich imagination. He and his friends often dreamt of different adventures. Tom was very naughty, but he was kind and brave, besides he was very noble. To add to this, he was a real friend, and his friend could rely on him.
The book is beautifully written, it is touching and funny. Moreover, the author`s sense of humour draws children`s attention to the book and makes the book amusing and entertaining.
It`s well worth reading and I highly recommend it to those who haven`t read it yet.

My Favourite Book
            I am fond of reading and I can`t imagine my life without books. Man cannot live on bread alone. Books are the source of knowledge and the means of self perfection.
            I like to read books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and my favourite story is “The Hound [haund] of the Baskervilles”. It is an intriguing story that takes place in London and Dartmoor.
            The book is full of thrilling thrilling moments, as the author creates tension with unexpected twists and vivid descriptions. This fascinating book is about the famous detective, Sherkock Holmes, who tries to solve the mysterious death of Sir Charles Baskerville. Soon it becomes clear that Sir Henry, sir Charles` nephew is also in danger. Fortunately Holmes manages to solve the mystery and protects Sir Henry`s  life.
            The book is beautifully written. The reader is kept in suspense until the very end of the book. What gives the book its dark atmosphere, is the silent, evil presence of the legendary hound which dominates the story throughout.
            I thoroughly recommend “The Hound [haund] of the Baskervilles”. It`s well worth reading. It is a highly entertaining read as the author shows the depth of psychological analysis and the insight into the human nature.

                        When I have spare time I read books with great pleasure. Time spent on a good book is never wasted. I have read many interesting books: (…..), but my favourite book is “Robinson Crusoe” by Daniel Defoe. Daniel Defoe lived many years ago. He wrote the novel “Robinson Crusoe” in 1719 when he was 59.
            The plot of the book is very gripping and has an unexpected twist. The language is rich and interesting.
            This novel is about one boy. He became a sailor as he liked sea very much. He went to sea many times, but once the ship broke and all people were drowned. But Robinson could swim and saved himself. The sea carried him to the shore. Unfortunately there were no people there.
            Robinson Crusoe lived on an island for 28 years. He worked a lot, he worked all the time and learnt to make many useful things. I think that this novel is a praise to human labor and the victory of a man over nature. The book is full of thrilling moments as the author creates tension with unexpected twists and vivid descriptions. I am sure that this novel seizes on all generations. Russia’s Educational System

                                            Russia’s Educational System

     Citizens of Russia have the right to education which is guaranteed by the Constitution. The public educational system in our country incorporates pre-school, general school, specialized secondary and higher education.

       Pre-school includes creches[1] and kindergartens. Children there learn numbers, letters, colours. But pre-school education isn’t compulsory - children can get it at home.

      Compulsory education is for children from 6(7) to 17 years of age. The main link in the system of education is the general school which prepares the younger generation for life and work in modern society. There are various types of schools: general secondary schools, schools specializing in a certain subject, lyceums and others. Tuition in most of them is free of charge, but some new types of schools are fee-paying.

        The term of study in a general secondary school is 11 years and consists of primary, middle and upper stages. Children are accepted to the first grade at the age of 6 or 7. They are taught, ideally, by a single teacher through all four elementary grades (except for physical training and foreign languages). At the middle stage of a secondary school the children learn the basic laws of nature and society at the lessons of History, Algebra, Literature, Physics and many others. The school year extends from September 1 to the end of May and is divided into three or four terms. The Study Programme in schools is fixed. Students are graded on a 5-step scale, ranging in practice from 2 ("unacceptable") to 5 ("excellent"); 1 is a rarely used sign of extreme failure.

         After 9th form pupils have to sit for examinations. Also, they have a choice between entering the 10th grade of a general secondary school and enrolling in a specialized secondary or vocational school. After finishing the 11th form of a secondary school all pupils have to take Unified State Examinations. One, who finishes the secondary school, receives a Secondary Education Certificate, giving the right to enter any higher educational establishment.

What are the Russians like? 8th form Card1(2)

                                What are the Russians like?

    When foreigners think of Russians as one nation, they are mistaken as Russia is a land of over 100 nationalities so it’s difficult to describe a typical Russian. Some Russians are fair-haired with blue or grey eyes, while others are dark-haired with brown eyes.
    However, there are many things that Russian people have in common. For example, most Russians are patriots of their country. They are usually homesick when they leave Russia for a long time and they are keen supporters of traditions. Russian people keep up a lot of folk traditions based on Christianity and the Russian Orthodox Church but there are other religions in Russia too and  there are people who are non-believers.
      Like British people, Russians enjoy gardening. They grow their own fruit and vegetables in summer. Some people say that Russians can be careless and disorganized but I think that most Russians are kind-hearted, hospitable and friendly people who like receiving guests and treating them to many delicious dishes.

My Heart's in the Highlands by Robert Burns

My Heart's in the Highlands

by Robert Burns
(1759-1796)
Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,
The birth-place of Valour, the country of Worth;
Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here;
My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer;
A-chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,
My heart's in the Highlands wherever I go.

Farewell to the mountains high covered with snow;
Farewell to the straths and green valleys below;
Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods;
Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods.

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here;
My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer;
A-chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,
My heart's in the Highlands wherever I go.

My Love is like a Red, Red Rose- Robert Burns

Culture Studies:"To A Mouse" R.Burns

To A Mouse

On turning her up in her nest with the plough, November 1785.

Robert Burns was a poet, but that was not what earned him his living. As with most artists of his time he had to have some means of earning his keep. In Burns' case he earned most of his money, sparse though this was, from farming. This is why he is also known as the "Ploughman Bard". It was while he was ploughing one of his fields that he disturbed a mouse's nest. It was his thoughts on what he had done that led to his poem, "To A Mouse", which contains one of his most often quoted lines from the poem. I am sure that you will recognize it, probably not from the Scottish words, but from the translation, lines 4 and 5 from verse 7.

Small, sleek, cowering, timorous beast,
 O, what a panic is in your breast!
 You need not start away so hasty
 With hurrying scamper!
 I would be loath to run and chase you,
 With murdering plough-staff.

 I'm truly sorry man's dominion
 Has broken Nature's social union,
 And justifies that ill opinion
 Which makes thee startle
 At me, thy poor, earth born companion
 And fellow mortal!

 I doubt not, sometimes, but you may steal;
 What then? Poor beast, you must live!
 An odd ear in twenty-four sheaves
 Is a small request;
 I will get a blessing with what is left,
 And never miss it.

 Your small house, too, in ruin!
 It's feeble walls the winds are scattering!
 And nothing now, to build a new one,
 Of coarse grass green!
 And bleak December's winds coming,
 Both bitter and keen!

 You saw the fields laid bare and wasted,
 And weary winter coming fast,
 And cozy here, beneath the blast,
 You thought to dwell,
 Till crash! the cruel plough past
 Out through your cell.

 That small bit heap of leaves and stubble,
 Has cost you many a weary nibble!
 Now you are turned out, for all your trouble,
 Without house or holding,
 To endure the winter's sleety dribble,
 And hoar-frost cold.

 But Mouse, you are not alone,
 In proving foresight may be vain:
 The best laid schemes of mice and men
 Go often askew,
 And leaves us nothing but grief and pain,
 For promised joy!

 Still you are blest, compared with me!
 The present only touches you:
 But oh! I backward cast my eye,
 On prospects dreary!
 And forward, though I cannot see,
 I guess and fear!

9 класс Choosing your future profession

                                   Choosing your future profession
       Choosing your future profession has always been very important. They say that the profession a person chooses, in many ways, determines his future life. For most people choosing a career is not an easy task. It is one of the most important decisions a person can make. If the chosen career is the right one it can     make a person happy and successful for the rest of their life.
There are several factors that influence young people’s future career choices. These are mainly the material and spiritual aspects of the future profession. It’s generally believed that professions should be both prestigious and interesting. At the same time, other factors are important. Much depends on the inclinations and interests of the person. Although it’s wonderful when one’s hobby becomes one’s profession, but it seldom happens in reality. Another important factor is social environment. And, of course, the future profession needs to be interesting and meet the demands of the person. Many people first analyse their future prospects to have good standarts of living and prospects.
No doubt school plays an important part in the decision-making process as it teaches you different subjects, helps you to discover your special talents and to communicate with other people.
I hope my future profession can bring me happiness and satisfaction. I think people would respect me. I believe I have the necessary personal traits which my future career requires. I’m reliable and punctual; responsibility is one of my strong points.

8 класс Topic: My School.

Topic: My School.

I study at school 316. It specializes in the English language. That is why we have English lessons six days a week. My school is one of the oldest specialized schools in St.Petersburg. It is famous for its high-quality education and strict discipline. What is more, our teachers are experienced and well-qualified, so they make lessons interesting and very useful.
    The school is a four-storied building rather plain from outside but more attractive inside. We have got classrooms for Maths, History, Russian, Social Science, Art, Geography and labs for Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Besides, there are two classes for Computer Science. All the classrooms are well-equipped as they have smart-boards, DVDs, CD-players, TV-sets and lap-tops.
     I think that our school is properly designed for social and out –of- school activities. All the concerts and parties take place in the Assembly Hall. Also, we can do different sports in the gym. We have a football, basketball and volleyball team. Then, we can join a Handicraft circle“Smart Hands” as well as an Art circle “Merry Brush”. If you are interested in music and dancing, join our choir or dancing studio.
    I like my school as it is the second home for me. I really like my class and always try to be on good terms with my classmates. We help each other and I feel I can rely on my friends in difficult situations. It is great to have so many friends. That is why I can say that I am happy at school.
